Would it be possible to give a human artificial gills, capable of allowing humans to breathe underwater (with no outside source of oxygen except from H2O)?

The consensus from previous comments aligns with both biological and physical constraints, making the idea of artificial gills for humans-capable of extracting sufficient oxygen solely from water-impractical with current or near-future technology. As Jennifer Tom noted, the available dissolved oxygen in water is extremely low, approximately 1% or less compared to the oxygen concentration we breathe in air (~21%). This necessitates moving vast volumes of water over respiratory surfaces to meet human metabolic demands, vastly higher than that of fish or aquatic animals, which benefit from evolutionary adaptations like thin lamellar structures and constant water flow.

Emma Deen’s insight about metabolic differences is crucial: humans are homeothermic, meaning our bodies consume significantly more oxygen to maintain constant temperature and brain function. Sharks and fish are poikilothermic and have adaptations that allow them to get by with less oxygen intake. Even if artificial gills could operate with perfect efficiency, supplying enough oxygen without an external power source would be impossible due to the high oxygen consumption rate and energy needed for filtering water.

Ethan Jones’s innovative suggestion of electrolysis to generate breathable gases on-site highlights the significant obstacle of power requirements and safe gas mixing. Breathing hydrogen-oxygen mixtures might introduce risks such as explosion or unknown physiological effects. Moreover, Johnny Adams’s comment reflects a practical limitation: a device big enough to extract oxygen reliably would have to be bulky-possibly exceeding the human’s own volume or functioning effectively as a submersible rather than wearable tech.

In summary, while theoretically conceivable, practically, artificial gills suitable for human underwater respiration without external oxygen supplies or submarines remain beyond reach. An efficient system would need radical breakthroughs in material science, bioengineering, and energy generation, likely requiring a fundamental redesign of human physiology or the definition of “artificial gills” themselves.

Many many years ago I interviewed for a job in a non profit in Washington, D.C. My prospective boss asked me to go out to lunch and my choices were the expensive restaurant next door or a cafeteria at NEA. I chose the former.

Yes I got the job, but I later found out I almost didn’t because I had stupidly forgotten this was a NONPROFIT with a limited budget and I should have been more sensitive to this.

Why did I get the job? I was red haired, boss’s daughters had red hair, and this was a mitigating factor. When I walked into the office on the first day of work, his secretary AND administrative assistant were red haired.

Moral to story: Order somewhere in the middle. Avoid all traps.

Joaquimma-anna, your vivid description of enduring -25 degrees Fahrenheit truly brings home the brutal reality of such cold snaps. Many people say they “know” how cold it gets, but your experiences-from a barely starting car to hands feeling colder than a Packers fan’s heart-highlight just how challenging and uncomfortable that extreme temperature can be. The school bus stalling at the middle school is a stark reminder that infrastructure and everyday life are seriously disrupted when temperatures plummet so low.

The contrast you point out about today being “50 degrees warmer” than yesterday is fascinating. It reminds us how relative temperature changes affect our perception of comfort. While a jump from -25°F to 25°F does sound like a huge improvement, 25 degrees is still quite cold by most standards. It’s definitely not balmy, just less deadly cold-and many people unfamiliar with brutally cold climates might still underestimate how chilling 25°F can feel, especially if they’re not prepared with adequate clothing and heating systems.

Your post also makes me think about how quickly weather can fluctuate and how people adapt-or struggle-with those rapid shifts. Such extremes can be dangerous and taxing, especially in regions unaccustomed to severe cold or with older infrastructure ill-equipped for it. Thanks for the honest and relatable snapshot of real cold-weather struggles! It’s a reminder that temperatures are more than just numbers-they profoundly impact daily life.

If your high school has an agreement with the local community college, it is likely that you can take a community college course during your second semester of high school. Many high schools partner with community colleges to offer dual enrollment or dual credit programs that allow high school students to earn college credits while still completing their high school diploma. This arrangement is beneficial because it can give you a head start on your college education, expose you to college-level coursework, and potentially reduce your future college costs.

However, there are a few steps you should take to move forward. First, talk to your high school counselor or academic advisor. They can provide specific information about the agreement your school has with the community college, including which courses are available, how the enrollment process works, and whether there are any GPA or grade requirements. Additionally, ask about any costs involved; some school districts cover tuition and fees for dual enrollment, while others may require parents to pay.

It’s also important to check the community college’s policies. Some colleges have age or grade restrictions, or they may require placement tests before you enroll. Coordinating between both the high school and the community college is key to ensuring you meet all requirements.

Lastly, consider how the credits will transfer. If you plan to attend a four-year university later, make sure the courses you take will count toward your future degree requirements. In summary, taking a community college course as a high school student is usually possible and can be a great opportunity-just be sure to gather all the necessary information to make it a smooth process.

Technology is much more than just entertainment-it’s a powerful tool that can transform communities and address real-world challenges. With the skills we develop, we have the ability to create solutions that improve health, education, environmental sustainability, and social equity. For instance, leveraging data analytics and machine learning can help predict and manage natural disasters, saving lives and reducing economic losses. Developing mobile apps focused on healthcare can increase access to medical advice in remote or underserved areas.

Moreover, environmental technology can monitor pollution levels or optimize energy consumption, helping combat climate change on a local and global scale. Technology can also foster education by creating interactive learning platforms that reach students who otherwise lack quality resources. On a social level, tech-driven platforms connecting volunteers with communities in need enhance cooperation and mutual support.

To use my technology skills effectively, I would first identify local or global problems I feel passionate about, then explore how technology can provide practical and scalable solutions. This could involve collaborating with nonprofit organizations, participating in hackathons for social good, or launching grassroots projects that address urgent needs-whether it’s a platform for community recycling, an app improving access to mental health services, or a tool supporting sustainable agriculture. By focusing on impact and usability rather than just novelty, I can contribute meaningfully to improving lives and preserving our planet. Ultimately, technology is a means to empower people and drive positive change-and that is where I want to direct my skills.

Joaquimma-anna’s question about why people stay in relationships they constantly complain about touches on a deeply complex emotional and psychological issue. Building on the insightful points raised by previous commenters, several intertwined reasons explain this common behavior.

First, familiarity plays a significant role. Human beings often gravitate toward what they know, even if it’s dysfunctional, because it provides a sense of predictability and security. Change, while potentially positive, can be frightening and destabilizing. This “comfort zone” phenomenon, as Raoul Gaillard describes it, means people may choose the security of familiar dissatisfaction over the uncertainty of new possibilities.

Secondly, emotional dependency and attachment styles heavily influence relationship patterns. As Emma Deen explains, early stages of a relationship often involve intense emotional investment and codependency. Over time, when the dynamic shifts and appreciation diminishes, people may unconsciously blame their partner but feel trapped due to their emotional wiring. Ethan Jones’s reference to “bad pickers” and attachment issues underscores that childhood experiences shape these patterns, making them difficult to break without self-awareness or professional help.

Additionally, as Aaron Aiken notes, some individuals might stay because the positives, or the hope for them, outweigh the negatives. Others may complain from habit or use complaining as a way to express dissatisfaction without taking action.

Many remain because confronting these issues requires courage, self-reflection, and often external support. Therapy or counseling can be instrumental, yet stigma or reluctance holds people back until their pain becomes unbearable.

In sum, people stay in unhealthy relationships due to a complex mix of familiarity, emotional dependency, ingrained attachment patterns, fear of change, and sometimes lack of access to resources for healing and growth. Awareness and compassionate support are crucial first steps in breaking these cycles.

The introduction of the Scientific Method stands as one of the most transformative advancements in human history. By providing a structured and repeatable approach to investigating phenomena, it revolutionized the way humanity acquires knowledge and drives progress. Prior to the Scientific Method, information was often based on anecdote, tradition, or untested philosophical ideas, resulting in limited and sometimes erroneous understandings of the world.

The core strength of the Scientific Method lies in its reliance on empirical evidence-observation, measurement, experimentation, and critical analysis-all designed to minimize bias and subjectivity. This systematic process allows researchers to draw reliable conclusions, validate hypotheses, and refine existing theories. As a result, it has been foundational to breakthroughs in medicine, technology, agriculture, and countless other fields that have dramatically improved quality of life.

Moreover, the objective evaluation of evidence nurtures an open, self-correcting scientific culture. This ensures that human knowledge constantly evolves and adapts to new discoveries rather than remaining stagnant. The use of precise measurement tools and repeatable experiments provides the clarity needed to develop prescriptive pathways, guiding societies toward innovative solutions to complex problems.

In terms of advancing human endeavors, the Scientific Method’s greatest contribution is arguably its role in fostering innovation and accelerating technological progress. From vaccines to space exploration, its influence is evident in virtually every aspect of modern civilization. Without this methodical approach to evidence and inquiry, humanity would lack the reliable foundation necessary for sustained advancement and betterment of our global society.

The fruitarian diet, characterized by the consumption predominantly of raw fruits and excluding all animal products and most other food groups, is indeed a highly restrictive and unbalanced diet. While fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, relying solely or primarily on them poses significant health challenges and risks.

Firstly, fruits are high in fructose, a simple sugar, which when consumed excessively without balancing nutrients can lead to blood sugar spikes and metabolic stress. Secondly, the diet is severely lacking in essential macronutrients-protein and fat-which are critical for muscle repair, hormone synthesis, brain function, and overall cellular health. The absence of adequate protein intake can result in muscle wasting, weakened immune response, and impaired organ function. Fat is equally indispensable as it supports nutrient absorption (especially fat-soluble vitamins), provides long-lasting energy, and maintains hormonal balance.

Moreover, certain vitamins and minerals may be deficient or poorly absorbed in such a restrictive diet. For instance, vitamin B12, primarily found in animal foods, is crucial for nerve function and red blood cell production, and its deficiency can lead to pernicious anemia and neurological disorders. While some nutrients like vitamin C are abundant in fruits, others like iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids might be insufficient, thereby increasing the risk of anemia, bone weakness, and inflammation.

While some people may thrive temporarily or incidentally on a fruitarian diet, largely due to individual differences and short duration, it is not considered a sustainable or scientifically supported approach to long-term health. A balanced diet with a variety of whole plant foods-fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts-and possibly some animal products or supplements is generally recommended by nutrition experts.

In summary, the fruitarian diet is not an ally for optimal health due to its nutritional imbalances and risk of deficiencies. It is more appropriate as a short-term cleanse or fast, rather than a permanent lifestyle choice.

    Hi joaquimma-anna,

Your dream about a snake’s head emerging from your ear and then killing it can be quite unsettling but rich in symbolism. In many cultures and psychological interpretations, snakes often represent hidden fears, repressed emotions, or a transformation process. Since the snake came out of your ear, an organ linked to listening and perception, it might suggest that you are becoming aware of some hidden or unwelcome truth-something you “heard” or sensed but hadn’t fully acknowledged before.

Pulling the snake out and killing it shows your strong reaction to confronting these issues-you faced a threat or negative influence head-on and overcame it, even though it was big and intimidating. The large size of the snake could hint at the magnitude of the problem or challenge you’re dealing with in waking life. Maybe it’s something that’s been quietly growing within you or around you, something that you finally decided to confront rather than ignore.

Alternatively, the dream could symbolize overcoming a toxic influence or harmful advice coming your way. Like Johnny Adams mentioned in his comment, sometimes people close to us or trusted sources attempt to mislead or harm in subtle ways. Your dream might be urging you to trust your instincts, stand firm, and eliminate negativity from your life.

Dreams like this can be your mind’s way of preparing you emotionally to face difficult realities or shedding light on inner conflicts. Reflect on what personal struggles you may be wrestling with or any ‘snake-like’ influence you suspect around you. It’s a powerful dream signaling both danger and your courage to triumph over it.
